What’s the matter with Children these days

Today’s children are navigating a bizarre obstacle course of modern life that often leaves adults asking, usually over a cup of coffee, “what on earth is going on” with the younger generation. Unlimited screen time, social media before they’ve even lost all their baby teeth, and constant digital noise can turn attention spans into goldfish-sized blips, keep sneakers suspiciously clean from lack of use, and crank up anxiety and social awkwardness to sitcom levels. On top of that, today’s parenting styles range from overprotective “helicopter” missions that never land to overscheduled calendars that leave about three minutes a week for good old-fashioned, do-nothing, absolutely-bored-out-of-your-mind play—where resilience and social skills actually like to hang out. But the truth is, kids are mostly mirroring the fast-paced, tech-obsessed circus around them. Instead of blaming the children (who didn’t exactly invent smartphones), adults can step in as the slightly wiser ringmasters: setting saner limits around technology, nudging kids toward real-world fun with actual humans, and modeling the calm, healthy habits they keep telling kids to have.
